The Gilts are Growing
Daisy is enjoying a bit of shelled corn with some freshly cracked eggs. The gilts are doing well after just two weeks. As this is my first time working with hogs I was unsure how they'd do coming to us directly from their mama . . . literally weaned when they came over the side of the fence to me. We feed a combination of milk (nothing special, just out of a plastic gallon purchased at the local gas station) and a pig starter/grower mix. Due to the cost of the starter/grower I have started moving them to a straight grower mix and shelled corn. They seem to be doing great and should be eating 100% grower ration (and some corn) by Monday night. Since hog grower ration costs less than 1/2 of the starter/grower ration that makes me very happy!
We have also discovered that the hogs LOVE fresh eggs! We have too many to eat at the moment (I really need to work on selling more!) and the pigs seem to enjoy them as much as the cats. The benefit with the pigs is the eat the shells too! I figure the extra protien shouldn't hurt them much - as long as we keep the amount of eggs they eat within reason.
